Benghazi, 28 May 2015:
A soldier seized in heavy fighting in Benghazi today was almost immediately beheaded by his IS . . .[restrict]captors.
Three pictures of the murder were posted on IS-related social media. The victim, thought to be a member of the 21st Saiqa battalion, has been named as Ahmed Elsnane. He fell into IS hands during heavy fighting around Sabri. He was apparently taken to Guwarsha to be executed.
It seems that in the fighting the army managed the push IS fighters out of a some streets and a number of their strongpoints. Tanks and a Mil 35 attack helicopter were used in the army assault. Troops were reportedly later combing buildings in search of surviving militiamen.
The circumstances in which Elsnane was captured are unclear. Nor has the army released any information on casualties in the fighting which was continuing early this evening. The Benghazi Medical Centre and the Jalaa hospital also declined to give details of the dead and injured that they have received before a formal statement is issued tomorrow.
