Tripoli, 22 May 2015:

“Our blood is not cheap”  say angry locals who  have blocked the east-west coastal highway at Harawa to all but emergency vehicles, demanding action be taken against nearby IS forces.

The town council announced the road closure today but also said that it apologised to “the Libyan people” for the disruption that would be caused.

It said that it had been forced to take the measure following two attacks by IS forces from Nufaliya, 50 kilometres to the east. Last week two townspeople were captured in an early morning raid and later beheaded.  Then yesterday a suicide car bomber exploded a vehicle at a checkpoint to the east of  Harawa causing minor injuries.

Leaders in the town, whose population is predominantly Awlad Suleiman, are demanding that action be taken against IS.  They say the road will be blocked until the area is cleared of them.

In a statement the town council said that it very much regretted being forced to shut down a key highway  “ But we had to take this action, “ said the statement, “Our blood is not cheap”.  It added that after they had beheaded their two captives from Harawa, IS had then mutilated and burnt their bodies.
