Leon, trapped in Tobruk airport . . .[restrict](photo:file)
Benghazi, 23 March 2015:
A surely frustrated UNSMIL chief Bernardino Leon flew out of Tobruk this evening after angry crowds blocked his way from the airport into the town where he had planned to meet House of Representatives president Ageela Salah.
He was greeted on the tarmac by foreign minister Mohamed Al-Dairi. However he was unable to leave the airport building because of the crowds surrounding it. They were protesting what they said was Leon’s closeness to Libya Dawn, in defiance of the legitimacy of the elected parliament and government.
Trapped within the terminal, it is understood that Leon’s called Salah asking if the HoR president could drive out to the airport and meet him there. For reasons that are not clear, Salah said that he could not make the journey.
After more than an hour stuck on the ground, Leon and his party re-boarded their executive jet and flew out of Tobruk at around ten this evening.
Libya Dawn officials had announced that Leon would be arriving in Tripoli today. It is not known where the UN aircraft went after leaving Tobruk [/restrict]
