Malta, 21 February 2015:
The GNC/Libya Dawn Hassi Salvation government is considering the construction of a water desalination plant in the west of Tripoli, LANA reports.
The plant is expected to have a capacity of 200,000 cubic metres per day.
On Thursday, the Salvation government water minister visited a number of sites proposed for the Tripoli West plant by Janzur Municipality Council. No further details regarding the construction of the plant were reported.
It will be recalled that Tripoli, like most of Libya, depends on water supplies from the Man-made River Project. Indeed, Tripoli relies overwhelmingly on wells and pumping stations located to its south.
Tripoli has been the victim of a number of water cuts since the 2011 revolution. The water cut of 24 August had been caused by power cuts to the wells in the Hassauna area.
The water cut of 9 August was caused by power cuts to Hassouna and the Tarhuna pumping station. There had also been a major water outage earlier in July. There had been other water cuts.
The proposal to construct a water desalination plant for Tripoli is thought to be part of a plan to reduce the capital’s dependency on Man-made River water arriving from the south and had been discussed by previous governments.
