Benghazi, 16 February 2015:
Egyptian planes have bombed Derna which is controlled by the Islamic State (IS) in reprisal for . . .[restrict]the killing of 21 Egyptian Christians by IS members in Sirte.
In a statement broadcast on Egyptian TV, the military said the attacks took place at dawn this morning. “The air strikes hit their targets precisely”, the announcer said. The targets are said to have been IS training facilities and ammunition stores.
Yesterday Egyptian President Abdel Fattah Al-Sisi went on TV to warn that Egypt would take revenge against IS for the brutal slayings, a video of which was published yesterday.
One of the targets is said to be the west Derna headquarters of the Jebel Company which IS has been using as its base. At least four airstrikes have been reported in the town as a whole.
The head of Operation Dignity, General Khalifa Hafter has backed the Egyptian airstrikes attacks but has also said that Libya did not want Egyptian troops to intervene on the ground. [/restrict]
