Tripoli, 23 January 2015:
Italian Foreign Minister Paolo Gentiloni has called on the continuing General National Congress (GNC) to join the . . .[restrict]UN-sponsored national dialogue in Geneva.
Just under a fortnight ago, the GNC agreed to join the talks provided they were held inside Libya, but decided to withdraw on Wednesday after the Benghazi branch of the Central Bank of Libya (CBL) was seized by the Libyan army. The army says it took the bank from Ansar Al-Sharia. The rump Congress claims it was looted.
The United Nations Support Mission in Libya (UNSMIL) released a statement Thursday condemning the attack on the CBL, unusual in that there are conflicting accounts of what happened, which was seen as a further move to get the Congress on board with the dialogue. [/restrict]
