Tripoli, 7 December 2014:
The government has decided to renovate and re-open an airport outside of the eastern town . . .[restrict]of Beida.
Deputy Prime Minister for Services and Affairs Abdul Salam Al-Badri, along with a delegation from Beida, visited the site of the Kharuba Airport this week to lay the foundation stone in an official ceremony.
In his speech at the event, Badri remarked that the extent to which the surrounding region had been neglected was demonstrated by the fact this his was he first visit by a government official since the revolution.
“The era of marginalisation has ended,” Badri said, “and this region, which was a safe haven for the Libyan hero, Omar Al-Mukhtar, in his war against the Italian occupiers for the sake of Libyan independence, has a right to share in Libya’s development.”
The Kharuba airfield was build during World War II and renovated 20 years ago, but was quickly neglected.
According to specialists, the airport is about 50% ready to start operations. Plans are in progress to update the structure and equipment in order to enable the airport to receive domestic and international flights in the near future.
It is hoped that the additional airport will relieve Labraq of some of its traffic. [/restrict]
