14 October 2014:
Vandals have again attacked a historic mosque in Tripoli’s Old City. Today it was was the Shaib Al-Ain Mosque.
It is alleged that a group of extremists have been patrolling Tripoli’s mosques listing those that need to be “purified” of such things as graves in grounds or excessive adornment or are known to follow Sufist teaching. The same happened two years ago, when several mosques were ransacked and vandalised and one, the Sidi Sha’ab Mosque opposite the Radisson Blue Mahary Hotel, was completely bulldozed.
So far, the Karamanli and Darghouth mosques have been attacked as has the Othman Pasha Madrassa. The attacks have been condemned by both the Libyan Committee of Ulema and the Ministry of Interior, but nothing is being done to protect Tripoli’s mosques from what are alleged to be elements within Libya Dawn forces.
