Benghazi, 30 September 2014:
A retired external security officer was shot dead yesterday in Benghazi as he was leaving a . . .[restrict]mosque after Zuhr (midday) prayers.
It was the second time that Taher Qussibat, in his 70s, had been attacked. According to the family, he was shot and wounded in the shoulder six month ago. Afterwards, however, he received an apology from his would-be killers saying that they had attacked the wrong man.
It is not known if the retired officer who was active during under the Qaddafi regime was again mistaken for someone else or was the assassins’ real target this time.
There has been a deluge of assassinations in the city in recent days largely, it is believed, because of an attempt by militants to destabilise and terrorise the city. Last week alone, some 30 people – ordinary civilians as well as security officials – were assassinated and four others wounded. [/restrict]
