Tripoli, 23 August 2014:
The UN Support Mission in Libya (UNSMIL) has continued in its efforts . . .[restrict]to broker a ceasefire as it warns of the “catastrophic consequences of continued fighting”.
UNSMIL has said it will continue to assist the warring parties to reach a ceasefire as a prelude to the “resumption of the political process”, emphasising the responsibility of “the legitimate institutions for the completion of the transitional phase”. The mission added that all work now being done should be made in the “spirit of national reconciliation”.
The UN in Libya said it condemned the fighting in Benghazi and Tripoli, citing the indiscriminate use of artillery in residential areas as well as “the use of aircraft in military operations”.
UNSMIL said the county needed “consensus in order to the build state institutions based on the rule of law”. It added that only then would Libya be able to “address the problems that threaten its stability, national unity and the safety of its people”.
A delegation from UNSMIL was organised to travel to Tripoli just under two weeks ago to broker a ceasefire, but fighting continues. The House of Representatives has declared its own immediate ceasefire although seemingly with no effect.
UNSMIL left Libya for Tunisia just over one month ago following clashes close to their Janzur headquarters.
