Tripoli, 5 August 2014:
Director of the political division of the United Nations Support Mission in Libya (UNSMIL) Mueen . . .[restrict]Shariim has congratulated the House of Representatives on its successful opening session Monday but has also urged the nation’s leaders to address the current crisis and resolve it quickly.
In a statement released this morning, Shamin pointed out that yesterday’s successful inaugural session of parliament reflected the “genuine desire” of the Libyan people for democracy, as well is its own determination to move forward in completing the construction of a state of law and institutions based on respect for the values of justice, freedom, human rights and citizenship.
He cautioned, however, that the lawmakers had to promptly address the deteriorating situations in Tripoli and Benghazi in order to prevent the nation from falling into a “dark tunnel”. He urged them to stand up and support the UN Security Council’s call for an immediate, comprehensive and unconditional cease-fire.
Shamin also paid tribute to the former General National Conference (GNC), which he said had led the country under exceptionally difficult circumstances.
In a statement that will raise many eyebrows, he furthermore stated that Congress had continued Libya’s democratic transformation by ensuring the peaceful transfer of power to the newly elected House of Representatives. However, the president of Congress, Nuri Abu Sahmain, has condemned yesterday’s inaugural session and unconstitutional and illegal.
