Tripoli, 30 August 2014:
Heavy fighting broke out on the coast road to Zawia this morning. First reports suggested that . . .[restrict]Warshefana militiamen were mounting a counterattack to retake ground they ceded to Libya Dawn forces a week ago. However it was later being said that Dawn militias were assailing Warshefana positions.
Either way, there have been heavy exchanges of artillery and Grad missiles starting early today and only easing late this afternoon. Warshefana sources were at one point claiming that they had reoccupied Point 17 on the highway and the surrounding area.
It is not yet clear how much damage has been caused in the renewed fighting nor how many killed and injured there have been.
While the conflict re-erupted in the west of the capital, Dawn leaders were broadcasting appeals for the city’s police to return to their posts to maintain law and order. They would be assisted in the work by Dawn militiamen.
Armed robberies continue in the city. Yesterday the Rixos Hotel, next door to the old GNC chamber, was raided and sacked. Televisions and furniture were taken from rooms and public spaces and many areas trashed.
