Benghazi, 26 June 2014:
The remains of a chaotic and bloody struggle met the family of . . .[restrict]Salwa Bugaighis as they inspected the home where the activist and lawyer was shot and killed last night.
One of Bugaighis’ close relatives told the Libya Herald that family members had found Bugaighis shot in her living room. She said that blood covered the floor through the main rooms of the house and drag marks could be seen going from the kitchen and out the front door.
Scattered objects and appliances found in the kitchen have led the family to believe that Bugaighis’ husband, Essam Al-Ghariani, struggled with his wife’s killers before he was seized by them. The fate of Ghariani, who was recently elected a Benghazi municipal councillor, is unknown. He has disappeared, presumed kidnapped by the murderers during last night’s shocking attack.
The spokesman for Benghazi Medical Centre (BMC) has said Bugaighis was killed by a single gunshot wound to the head but that she had been stabbed several times in the chest following her death. He said she had been pronounced dead on arrival at the hospital but nevertheless doctors had tried to revive her. He said all of Bughaigis’ belongings had been returned to her family and that none of her jewellery had been stolen.
