Tripoli, 10 June 2014:
The new Heart Centre at Benghazi Medical Center (BMC) performed its . . .[restrict]first operation this morning.
“One of our surgeons completed the first open-heart surgery at our heart centre,” BMC media office director Khaleel Igwader told the Libya Herald.
The second tower of the hospital now holds two departments: the 17-bed Intensive Care Unit and the 54-bed Heart Centre which, Igwader explained, also has the Insertion Therapy and Heart and Chest Surgery Departments.
“We are also expecting to perform a heart valve insertion surgery on Thursday,” said Igwader.
The BMC, known by locals as the “1200 Bed Hospital”, was founded in the 1970s but was not completed until 2006.
In 2007, France and the EU pledged to complete theBMC and train its staff, paving the way for the hospital’s grand opening in 2009. [/restrict]
