Tripoli, 20 January 2014:
A candidate for the 60-member committee, lawyer Mohamed Abdulqader Tumi, survived an assassination attempt last night . . .[restrict]when an explosive device placed in his vehicle was detonated.
Tumi suffered only minor injuries in the blast, which severely damaged his vehicle.
“I left my office at 9 pm in Tripoli’s Ben Ashour district and I was on my way home,” Tumi told the Libya Herald. “I think someone put the bomb under my car when I stopped at a pharmacy to buy something.”
He said after this he noticed a car seemed to be following him. The explosive device was, however, detonated outside his house. No significant damage was caused to his property, Tumi said, but the explosion caused cracks to appear in the walls of some neighbouring houses.
“I immediately reported the incident to the relevant security authorities,” he said, adding that his car had been taken away for further investigation.
The 60-member Committee will be responsible for drafting Libya’s constitution. [/restrict]
