28 November 2013:
A member of the 1st Marines Battalion was murdered in Benghazi this morning. Mohamed Al-Abdeli was shot . . .[restrict]at around 8am in Sabri district while heading to his unit, military sources have disclosed. Jelaa Hospital have confirmed the killing saying that his body was first taken there, then to the Benghazi Medical Centre for washing before burial.
His killers are unknown but the marines have been working closely in the army’s Special Forces Saiqa Brigade which lost seven of its members in bitter fighting with Ansar Al-Sharia early on Monday morning. Seven civilians fighting alongside Saiqa were also killed in the clashes.
Yesterday, another marine was also shot dead in the city’s Laithi district.
Abdali’s murder brings the number of military personnel killed in Benghazi this month to 21.
Meanwhile, staff at the Jelaa Hospital are protesting today about the lack of security, hospital spokeswomen Sadia Al Barghathi told the Libya Herald. It follows an incident last night when a man took what was thought to be an explosive device to reception and started attacking members of staff. When members of Saiqa moved to arrest him he started shooting and they shot back. The man was eventually detained. He was believed to be under the influence of drugs. [/restrict]
