Benghazi/Tripoli, 11 October 2013:
A Benghazi imam narrowly escaped death early this afternoon when a bomb exploded . . .[restrict]under his car.
Sheikh Abdussalam Daifallah Al-Hassi was driving off after Friday prayers at the Taiba Mosque in city’s Hay Al-Salam area when the bomb went off, according to the spokesman for Benghazi Joint Security Room, Abdullah Al-Zaidi. He refuted reports that teh car had ben hit by RPGs.
Hassi is in the intensive care unit at Jalaa Hospital and has had to have a leg amputated.
The reason for the attack is unclear. The imam is said to be a Salafist, a group that is not particularly popular in Benghazi at present, but he was not outspoken. Although he had criticized the wave of killings in the city he had not accused anyone in particular. [/restrict]
