Tripoli, 8 September 2013:
Today is the first day back at school for most young Libyans across the country. In . . .[restrict]Tripoli, children in crisp new uniforms were seen leaving homes carrying small backpacks and new books.
The Sea Mermaid school in Mezran Street, which teaches some of the capital’s brightest students, is one of scores of schools that opened today.
Some schools, however, have decided to open on 15 September. The Little Angels Playgroup in Hay Andalus is one such, which has generally restarted late. However at the other end of the scale, the International School Benghazi, a GEMS global partner school, has been open since 27 August.
In Libya the school and working week is from Sunday to Thursday.
Primary education, which is both free and compulsory, runs from the ages of six to 15. Secondary school and university are optional.
