Abubakr Balaq under arrest yesterday

Tripoli, 7 June, 2013:

It has been reported that the head of the Ministry of Defence Support Unit (Isnad al-Amni), . . .[restrict]Abubakr Falaq, has been arrested on the orders of the Attorney General following an investigation into embezzlement.

The investigation was requested by the Ministry itself. It focussed on illegal payments allegedly being made within Ministry departments as well as on the gigantic fraud connected to the payment of the LD 4,000 grant ordered by the NTC last year for those who fought in the revolution.

There was massive overpayment with tens of thousands of fictitious names being added to the lists of claimants – and money being paid out on their behalf.

Investigations into the scam were ordered in April last year and payments temporarily suspended when the scale of irregularities came to light. According to government spokesmen at the time, over 450,000 claims were filed for the award.
