Tripoli, 25 May 2013:
The police in Jebel Akhdar District together with local elders and civil society institutions in the area have . . .[restrict]called on the Prime Minster, Ali Zeidan, to reject the resignation of Interior Minister Ashour Shuwail. They also called on the minister to withdraw his resignation.
Shuwail resigned earlier this month following the passing of the Political Isolation Law but said he would remain in office until Zeidan found a replacement. The Prime Minister this week nominated Mohamed Khalifa Sheikh to the post. Congress is due to vote on the matter on Sunday.
The call comes as no surprise. The capital of the Jebel Akdhar District is Beida – which also happens to be the Shuwail’s hometown. In November, when he was disbarred from becoming Interior Minister as a result of a ruling by the Integrity Commission, there were anti-Commission protests in the town.
The call is not expected to have any effect. [/restrict]
