Benghazi, 6 May 2013:
Sadeq Muftah Ellawati has been confirmed as police chief in Benghazi today.
He was made interim police chief by . . .[restrict]the Interior Ministry last month ago following the dismissal of Brigadier Ali Mansour Ferjani, himself appointed in February on the removal of Colonel Mustafa Raqiq as police chief.
The latter had been appointed in November following the assassination of the then head of police, Colonel Faraj Drissi.
Both Ferjani and Raqiq were reported to have been removed because of their failure to ensure security in the city which has seen continuing spate of killings of security officials and attacks on police stations, courts and other buildings. These continue. Today another military officer was murdered. Four days ago, the police station in Birkah district was bombed for the second time in a week and two days before that a bomb exploded at a girls’ institute in the city.
