Tripoli, 8 February 2013:
Sirte military commander Colonel Omar Abdessalam Al-Hasnawi is to meet with Congress President Mohamed Magarief tomorrow, Saturday, in Tripoli to . . .[restrict]brief him on his seizure yesterday by the Zawia Martyrs’ Brigade.
According to a local reporter in the town, Hasnawi spent yesterday morning inspecting a number of camps in the Sirte area. At one of them he was surrounded by the Zawia brigade. Three of his bodyguards were said to have been injured in a firefight before he was seized and taken to the brigade’s base.
He was later released and went to Misrata following the intervention of members of the Sirte Council of Elders who went to the base accompanied by a detachment from another brigade.
There has been no explanation as yet why he was seized and detained.
Sirte local council and its military council has reportedly issued a statement condemning the attack.
