With four of its six electric arc furnaces now back in operation, production at Libyan Iron & Steel Co (LISCO) approached 50,000 tonnes a month in December. A company executive told Platts Steel Business Briefing that in the last month of the year, 12,199 tonnes of slabs and 37,232 tonnes of billets had been produced. All long and flat product mills are now working with the exception of the hot-dip galvanising line and double-strand line.
LISCO’s output comprised 36,884 tonnes of bars, 655 tonnes of sections, 27,895 tonnes of hot rolled coils and 3,776 of cold rolled coils. The company has resumed exports of hot briquetted iron (HBI) to Europe and Turkey, and since February 2012 it has sent out around 240,000 tonnes of HBI.
LISCO has a design capacity of 1,324,000 tons of liquid steel. With around 6,500 workers, it is the largest employer in Libya. [/restrict]
