Tripoli, 7 January:
Libya’s naval forces have intercepted a large quantity of drugs from a vessel said to be flying an Italian flag but which had sailed from the Netherlands.
The find came following information that drugs would be smuggled into the country through cars arriving from Europe, said Commodore Ayoub Omar Kassem in a telephone interview with Libyan news agency LANA today, Monday.
After inspecting three cars from the vessel, Khoms Coastal Guards and officers from the anti-narcotics bureau found several kilos of hashish, heroin, marijuana and some ecstasy tablets. Twenty three more vehicles are due to be inspected and, according to the Commodore Kassem, the investigations are ongoing in the port of Khoms where the vessel has been impounded. [/restrict]
