Congressional committees meet

Tripoli, 7 December:

Three Congressional committees met on Wednesday. The Energy Committee discussed a proposal to halt the activities of all committees . . .[restrict]until the country’s security becomes stable. It supported the idea and called for meetings of the GNC alone to continue until a clear agenda was set for safety and security throughout the country.

The Committee for Budget and Planning, chaired Abdul Salam Abdullah Naasi, discussed with the Governor of Central Bank Libya’s advisor on Islamic banking affairs plans to ban the use of interest (riba) in banks. The committee was joined in the meeting by members of the committees for Endowments and Islamic Affairs and for Legislation.

The Committee of Endowments and Islamic Affairs, headed by Professor Mohamed Waleed, met the management of the Zakat Fund (Alms/Charity Fund) and discussed how to activate the role of the Fund and to assist management in their needs in communicating with stakeholders. Also present in the meeting were members of the Awqaf, Legislation, Finance and Economy committees, involved in drafting a law to prevent interest in banking.The committees agreed to meet again next week to discuss the issue.
