Most members of the council contacted by Libya Herald were keeping tight-lipped as to whether they would be standing and who else would be nominated. “You’ll know the results tomorrow,” said Khaled Al-Jazwee, who topped the ballot in District 8, Al-Qish and Al-Fuwaihat. “There’ll be a press conference after the vote.”
A doctor at Benghazi Medical Centre, he is seen as a prime contender for the post of leader.
Najat Al-Kikhia, who represents District 4, Al-Birka, confirmed to Libya Herald that she would be standing for the leadership position. Although the only woman to be elected to the council, she won more votes than any other candidate.
