Tripoli, 5 May:
The High National Elections Commission (HNEC) has reminded those from political parties or individuals wishing to stand as candidates for . . .[restrict]the National Conference (the constituent assembly) on 19 June, that they need to registrar at one of the HNCE candidate registration centres by 8 May.
There are 13 such centres across the country, one in each of the 13 mega-constituencies into which the country has been divided for the June elections.
Registration started on 1 May, although in some areas it did not get going until the next day.
There have been numerous complaints, particularly from parties, that the time frame is too short. An official from Mustafa Jibril’s National Alliance pointed out that candidates have to be nominated by 50 people who are themselves already registered voters. Registration for voters also only started on 1 May, and in some cases on 2 May.
The NHEC has put candidates’ registration forms online at their website www.hnec.lyThere are also enquiry lines at: 091 825 2901/2, 091 825 2905-8, or email [email protected]
