The Passport and Nationality Office in Sirte say that its employees have managed to carry on providing services for . . .[restrict]local resident on daily basis despite the damage to the office building and its database system during last year’s revolution.
Head of the Passport, Nationality and Foreign Affairs office, Colonel Ramadan Ali Tarouq, said that it had started issuing new passports and identity cards. So far it had issued 1,340 new passports and new 2,500 identity cards and renewed more than 4,000 existing identity cards.
The office also processed some 700 re-entry visas for Arabs and non-Arabs and authorised more than 1,000 permission letters to bring in foreign workers.
Meanwhile, it has been announced that a € 1.6m contract has been given to a German company to produce half a million new blue Libyan passports. They will replace the existing Qaddafi era passports with their covers in green, the ubiquitous colour of the old regime.
