Tripoli, 9 March: Libyans took to the streets across . . .[restrict]the country in their thousands after prayers on Friday to demonstrate against a plans in the east of the country to turn Libya into a federal state. On Tuesday, a conference in Benghazi set up a “Cyrenaica Transitional Council” in direct opposition to the NTC to recreate and govern the province abolished by King Idris in 1964.
Most Libyans fear that a return to federalism could lead to break-up of the country.
In Tripoli, Martyrs Square filled with flag–waving protestors of all ages. In the eastern city of Benghazi, protesters denounced the move.
There were also protests in Misrata, Beida, Derna and Tobruk as well as in other towns. [/restrict]
