Italian coastguards report that five illegal immigrants heading to Europe were found dead today on a boat stranded in Libya waters . . .[restrict]137 kilomertres south of the island of Lampedusa. Fifty-one other migrants were rescued.They were taken to Lampedusa.
Nineteen of them required urgent medical assistance according to a spokesman for the coastguard, Massimo Maccheroni. He is reported as saying that “we still don’t know how the people died or how long the boat had been at sea.”
The seven-meter boat, carrying immigrants from sub-Saharan Africa of various nationalities was said to have set sail from Libya. [/restrict]
