Benghazi, 15 May 2015:
The government has announced that it is planning to move Benghazi University to a new site.
Its . . .[restrict]spokesman, speaking at a press conference in Beida yesterday, said that because the university at Garyounis had been “completely destroyed” in the fighting between Ansar Al-Sharia and the army, it was proposed to acquire new a new site for the university.
This was the only quick way of enabling students to get back to their studies, the spokesman said, indicating that the new site would have buildings already in situ.
The university has said that it is looking to restart classes after Ramadan but will decide on a date nearer the time.
The Garyounis campus, which was being used as a supply base by Ansar, was regularly bombed by LNA planes and shelled by its ground forces in recent months. Ansar have now withdrawn.
Last month, Prime Minister Abdullah Al-Thinni said that the buildings had been so badly damaged that the campus would have to be rebuilt from scratch. Several buildings are, however, still seen as usable.
