Tripoli, 5 October 2014:
The Iranian Foreign Ministry has announced that it backs plans later this . . .[restrict]month for Algerian-hosted negotiations on the current Libyan crisis.
Iranian Foreign Ministry spokeswoman Marziyeh Afkham said yesterday that “the Islamic Republic of Iran welcomes the Algerian political initiative for national reconciliation in Libya”, FARS reported.
She said it was hoped that the Algerian initiative would lead to resolution of the conflict and bring about a national reconciliation in the country.
Iran strongly ruled out any military intervention adding that “negotiations between political wings will be the only way out of crisis, violence and insecurity”.
The scope of the planned talks in Algeria, have remained unclear although it would seem they will extend further than Monday’s discussion in Ghadames, hosted by the UN.
Algeria’s efforts are being publicly supported by the US and the EU. Last Thursday, Italian Special Adviser Giuseppe Buccino Grimaldi, who is also Rome’s ambassador in Tripoli, said that Italy “supports Algeria’s initiative” for a peaceful solution in Libya.
