Tripoli, 18 May 2014:
The courthouse in the west Tripoli suburb of Janzour has been daubed with pro-Islamist graffiti demanding . . .[restrict]it be closed.
“No to man-made laws” and “We want God’ law”, were among the slogans written on the walls early yesterday morning. Some windows were also broken.
The court, along with others in the country, is not being guarded at present because of the national strike by Judicial Police following the killing on 8 May of five of its members while on an operation in the Wershefana area. Janzour abuts it, indeed is considered by many to be part of it.
“We’re not guarding any court in Libya,” a member of the Judicial Police said. “We’re on strike because the government has done nothing except add some of us to the list of martyrs”.
An attempt to photograph the graffiti was frustrated by revolutionaries who said that doing so could exacerbate tensions.
Last month, the Janzour campus of Tripoli University ordered that female students must stop wearing tight-fitting clothes and, in preference, wear Saudi-style abayas. Make-up, too, was banned.
