Tripoli, 17 April 2014:
The administration at the Janzour branch of Tripoli University have issued a statement setting out a . . .[restrict]strict dress code for students saying that anyone who falls foul of new regulations will be suspended for a semester.
Under the new rules, female students are forbidden from wearing tight-fitting clothes. Long, baggy trousers are acceptable but black Gulf-style abayas as preferable. Make-up is not permitted, even for married women.
There are also a series of regulations for male students who are not allowed to wear T-shirts showing English writing or jeans with holes or marks. Hair gel and “hairstyles” are also banned.
The dress code has been met with outrage from students with other branches of the university worried that they too will soon have similar rules imposed on them.
Last month Sirte University set out new dress regulations for female students. The university also ruled that classes and lectures should be segregated by gender with male students sitting at the front and female students at the back.
