 DATT Interpreter Job Advertisement

The Ministry of Defence (MOD) team at the British Embassy in Libya is seeking two Interpreters. The main purpose of the role is to provide language and environmental support to the Defence Advisory and Training Team (DATT).

Main Duties and Responsibilities:

  • Interpret between English and Arabic for the Defence Advisory Team within the Embassy, at other locations around Tripoli and, on occasion, further afield.
  • Translate documents between English and Arabic.
  • Identify, develop and maintain links with senior figures within the Libyan MOD.
  • Remain abreast of defence and security issues and developments within Libya and inform the Defence Advisory Team as required.
  • Five day week, Sunday to Thursday. A total of 40 hours per week.

Interpreters must have their own vehicles and be prepared to travel and work around Tripoli as required by the DATT.  Locations will include, but are not restricted to, Ministry of Defence, Janzur Naval Academy, Mitiga Airbase and the Training Directorate.  There will be occasions when the individual will be required to work from these locations for a protracted period.  Willingness to travel is essential.

Salary: 2,993 LYD per month.

  • Fluency in English and Arabic
  • The ability to build a good network of contacts
  • Excellent written English and verbal communication skills
  • Excellent time management skills
  • Able to identify, categorise and prioritise work with minimal supervision
  • Good research and briefing skills
  • Organisational skills
  • Excellent team-working and inter-personal skills
  • Knowledge of defence and security issues in Libya
  • Flexibility to move at short notice to work in different areas of the city
  • Good IT skills
  • A full and clean driving license
  • Possess own transport
