British Embassy – Commercial Officer

The British Embassy is looking to recruit a commercial officer to work in its UK Trade & Investment (UKTI) team which is focused on supporting British companies win business in Libya. Libya is a key market for British companies, with exports up 43 percent from 2012 and strong Ministerial interest leading to investment in UKTI staff and sector specialists.

This is an exciting opportunity for the successful candidate to help shape and drive forward the UKTI’s commercial engagement in Libya and to work with teams both in Tripoli and London who are well regarded and exceeding their challenging targets set by UKTI HQ. The job is to take the lead on the education and capacity building sector which is clearly one of the Libyan government’s key challenges and where budgets are available. A secondary role will be to support work on the ICT sector.

The successful candidate is likely to have a good knowledge of the UK and or to have benefited from the UK’s education system and to have ideally worked either in the UK or Libya in this sector. Excellent written and oral communication skills in English and Arabic are expected and as part of the interview process literacy, IT and interpersonal skills will be tested.

The starting salary for this position is LYD 2,324.00 per calendar month.  Applicants should be able to start as soon as possible.  This will be a permanent full time position. Whilst flexible working is encouraged there will be occasions where the officer will be required to work outside of normal office hours (i.e. during visits). The successful applicant should be a self-starter who is highly motivated and able to work independently, whilst also being a good team player. As required by the role the officer may also be required to travel within Libya and from time to time to London, Tunisia, Dubai and Malta. The candidate can expect to spend a significant amount of the working day out of the office.

  • After training in London to understand the UKTI mission, values and strategy and be able to communicate and act upon them in Libya when representing UKTI.
  • To be able to articulate the HMG and UKTI business offer and how that matches the Libyan educational and capacity building need.
  • To understand the Libyan architecture (personalities, decision makers and processes) in the key ministries.
  •  To host and organise inward and outward business/ministry delegations and organise visit programmes.
  • To identify business opportunities (targets to be set) through personal engagement with relevant stakeholders and by monitoring commercial websites and publications and to post tender notices on the UKTI website.
  • To develop and maintain a wide range of current contacts within relevant organisations and the ability to build new relationships at a senior level quickly.
  • The successful applicant should be a Libyan citizen or have immigration status which allows him/her to work in Libya.
