The Indian government announced yesterday that it was partially lifting its ban on emigration to Libya, more than a . . .[restrict]year after it was put in place on 21 February 2011.
India’s overseas affairs minister, Vayalar Ravi, said the decision was taken in response to growing demand for manpower across various sectors, as the country begins to recover from last year’s revolution. Ministry officials added that there have been repeated requests for Indian workers to come to Libya, with many workers from countries such as Bangladesh, Egypt and the Philippines having already arrived.
The raising of the embargo will initially apply to doctors and health ministry staff, Ravi said, after the Libyan Ministry of Health made an approach to the Indian Embassy in Tripoli.
The Indian government will consider whether or not to implement a complete lifting of the ban after an assessment to be made following the National Congress elections on 7 July. [/restrict]
