Misrata militias promise protection for new government

By Libya Herald staff.

Misrata paper

Tunis, 15 October 2015:

Almost all of Misrata’s . . .[restrict]militias have come out firmly in support of the new Government of National Accord (GNA) partially unveiled by UN Special Envoy Bernardino Leon last week. In a letter bearing 57 varieties of militia stamps, they said that they would ensure the new government had security. They would attack anyone whom attacked it.

Calling on everyone to support the government, they said that anyone opposed to the GNA was against Libya.

The statement follows the firm endorsement of the agreement by Halbous brigade commander Fathi Bashagha, one of the delegates to the Libya Dialogue negotiations led by UN Special Envoy Bernardino Leon.

Leon has said that Bashagha one of a number of Misratans the UN envoy wants to see in the government, should be appointed head of the national security council.

Meanwhile, in a move reinforcing reports of a breakdown in plans for the Misratans and Zintanis to jointly ensure security in Tripoli, the Council of Zintani Tribes has said while it supported Dialogue and a GNA, it wanted changes to the one announced by Leon. Anyone involved in terrorism, it said, must be excluded. [/restrict]
