The electricity supply has been back on in Tripoli since Thursday but now it is the . . .[restrict]entire east of the country that is suffering blackouts. Yesterday, the coastal towns of Cyrenaica, from Tobruk to Benghazi, were affected by powercuts – in Benghazi from 3pm till 9pm and in Tobruk from 11:30 am until 8 pm. Again today there were cuts from late morning till around 3pm in Beida, 4pm in Bengahzi and even later in Tobruk.
The problem has been a cut in gas supplies to Benghazi North power station. According to GECOL, the state electricity company, a valve at the pumping station at Rajma, 10 kilometers east of Benina, switched off automatically because of a serious change in pressure. There was no explanation as to why this happened. It is, however, thought to be connected to the action of a group of protestors who have shut down the gas supply from the gas gathering facilities at Field 103, west of Jalu, to Zuweitina.
According to GECOL, engineers have fixed the problem at the Rajma, but warns that there could be further cuts if there are again severe pressure changes.
