A senior manager has angrily dismissed persistent reports, including what appeared to be an authentic . . .[restrict]press release from Libyan Airlines, that Benghazi’s Benina Airport is about to resume operations.
Osama Al-Farjani said today that the airport management had said nothing about Benina reopening. He insisted that the fighting elsewhere in the city currently made commercial flights an impossibility. Civil aviation rules, he said, meant the airport would have to be surrounded by a secure area of between 30 and 50 kilometres.
Farjani did however admit to news agency LANA that work to prepare the airport and fix damage buildings and facilities was well under way. New surveillance cameras, air-conditioning units and information display boards were being fitted he said. He also revealed that the airport had received no government funding since 2013.
