Tripoli, 9 April 2015:

Expressing that he shares with the Libyan people the aspirations of a “free, secure and democratic . . .[restrict]Libya firmly anchored on the rule of law,” new Canadian Ambassador David Sproule has introduced himself in a letter posted on the Canadian Embassy’s social media page.

Though he is only now stepping into the role, Sproule’s appointment as ambassador was announced  this January.  He  joined Canada’s Department of External Affairs in 1981, serving in Thailand, Laos, Singapore, Bangladesh, Afghanistan and the United States.  Most recently he served as the ambassador to Norway.

The Canadian Embassy was  shuttered last summer and moved to Tunis when Libya Dawn forces seized Tripoli.  Sproule said that the embassy would re-open “when a secure and stable environment has been restored”.

“The current conflict,” he said, “has only reinforced Canada’s commitment to support Libya and the Libyan people.”  Canada, he nsisted, would do its part to help the Libyan people in the transition process through which they are currently walking. He added that Canada believes there can be no military solution.  Canada supported the UNSMIL-led dialogue process and its stated goal of a national unity government, said Sproule.
