The government has been warned that Benghazi’s medical facilities are running out of drugs, anaesthetics . . .[restrict]and surgical supplies and cannot repair damaged equipment , largely because they do not have any money.
Deputy Minister of Health Dr Mesbahel Awami today heard for himself about the crisis facing the city when he met hospital and health centre managers at Jalaa Hospital .
Jalaa itself is suffering from a lack of medical supplies, medicines, anaesthesia and intensive care materials, the General Director of the facility said. The hospital also lacks money, making the purchase of supplies difficult, he added.
The General Director also said the hospital was struggling to repair damaged equipment—especially X-ray and MRI machines—because of problems with the engineering companies who make the repairs.
Beyond the technical issues facing the remaining working Benghazi health care facilities, the directors agreed that their most pressing need was to be able to continue to provide vaccinations and to care for those in need of dialysis.
Jalaa Hospital and Benghazi Medical Centre (BMC) are currently the only two fully operational hospitals in Benghazi, now that Jumhouriya Hospital, in the middle of the embattled Sabri district, has been forced to close.
BMC, also suffering from shortages, was forced to draw supplies from the now-closed 7 October Hospital last week to keep up with the growing influx of patients.
