India has evacuated another 38 nurses from Libya this week, flying them to Tunis from . . .[restrict]Labraq airport near Beida. Indian media has reported that another 53 will leave in the coming days.
The nurses, who had been working in Benghazi hospitals, will fly from Tunis to India. This is not the first time Indian medical personnel have been evacuated this year. While during the 2011 revolution Indian medics largely stayed at their posts when many other expatriate quit, this year 58 were evacuated in August. The Indian government has reported that it has taken out 3,000 Indians from Libya this year, though not all were medical staff.
In October the Libya Herald reported that Indian medical staff were being forced to work against their will at Hawari Hospital in Benghazi. Hawari is now closed. But with the steady evacuation of foreign staff, the city’s other two main hospitals, the Benghazi Medical Centre and Jalaa Hospital have been struggling to cope.
There are reportedly 600 Indian medical personnel still working in Libya. [/restrict]
