Britain’s Special Envoy to Libya Jonathan Powell and British Ambassador Michael Aron . . .[restrict]met officials from the House of Representatives on a two-day visit to Tobruk following a summit of all 11 special representatives to Libya in Paris.
The British diplomats met yesterday with the House’s Committee for Communication and Dialogue where they discussed the ongoing conflict in the country.
At a press conference following the meeting Abu Bakr Jamal, a member of the Committee, told reporters that the British officials had said that UN-led negotiations were the only way to avoid a futile armed struggle in Libya.
Jamal said that both the Committee and the British delegation had been in agreement that sustained and meaningful dialogue was of the utmost importance in ending the cycle of violence and resolving the differences that were being played out by armed groups on the streets of Libya’s cities.
The British officials also told the Committee that UN sanctions would be brought against those individuals and groups that did not engage in negations and obstructed peace in the country, Jamal said.
On Thursday Jonathan Powell met with the First Deputy President of the House of Representatives Mohammed Shaib. The two men discussed the progress which had been made since peace talks were launched in Gadames in September. Powell confirmed the British government’s support for the House of Representatives in Tobruk which he called the sole legitimate representative of the Libyan people.
