Benghazi, 9 September 2014:

Mayors from Misrata, Zliten, Esbaia and Gharian met yesterday in Sebha with their counterparts from . . .[restrict]four southern municipalities in a bid to encourage southern support for Libya Dawn.

Mohamed Muftah (Mayor of Misrata), Muftah Tahar (Zliten), Saad Al-Shartaa (Esbaia) and Yousuf Khalifa (Gharian) met with the mayors of Sebha, Hamid Al-Khiyali, of Albuabis, Abdulrahman Ihjaz, Brak Al-Shatti, Mohamed Nasr, and of Gardah Al-Shatti, Hassan Ali Matouk, telling them that the operation in Tripoli was a necessary continuation of the revolution which others were trying to steal.

The Mayor of Zliten, who stated that he was there to explain what had happened in Tripoli, claimed that he was in touch with Zintan Muncipal Council but that its Qaaqaa and Sawik brigades were “thieves” who were in the pay of the Libya army. He said he and others were coordinating with mayors in central and western Libya in support of Libya Dawn.

The Mayor of Misrata accused the media for “distorting” the facts about post-revolution Libya and claimed that a number of people, including associates of the Qaddafi regime, had jumped on the revolution bandwagon in a move to take it over.

While welcoming the visit, the southern mayors are reported to have taken the view that the divisions between Libyans needed to be healed and that force would not provide a solution to the country’s problems. What was needed, they said, was dialogue. [/restrict]
