Tripoli, 21 July 2014:

Respected Benghazi Congressman Suleiman Zubi and his Janzour colleague Fathi Al-Arabi were seized and detained on Tripoli’s . . .[restrict]Airport Road yesterday afternoon, reportedly by Zintani Military Police. Zubi was later released, but not Al-Arabi, a member of the Justice and Construction Party. He is still being held.

Zubi, an independent but viewed as close the Muslim Brotherhood, is said to have been freed by his captors because of his age and “out of respect for Cyrenaica”.

The two arrests were immediately denounced by the Ministry of Justice as well as General National Congress President Nuri Abu Sahmain, who demanded their immediate release.

In its condemnation of the abduction, Al-Arabi’s party said it held the government responsible for it. It was proof, it stated, of the Ministry of Interior’s failure, despite the large amount of funding and staff that it had at its disposal.

It has not yet been established what the two congressmen where doing on the Airport Road, a particularly dangerous place to be yesterday. [/restrict]
