Sawan re-elected head of Justice and Construction Party for four years

Tripoli, 27 April, 2014:

As expected, . . .[restrict]members of Justice and Construction party today re-elected today Mohamed Sawan as the party’s leader, this time for a four-year period.  He was first elected two years ago when the party was formed.

The election was on the final day of the party’s conference held at Tripoli’s Radisson Blu Mahary Hotel in Tripoli.

Sawan won a landslide victory with 340 votes compared to his rival Abdullah Alshalmani who had just seven.

Party members says that although he although he has not been a charismatic leader there is no one else to lead the party.

Paying generous tribute to Sawan, Alshalmani told the Libya Herald that he wished “all success to my colleague Mohamed Sawan in his hard mission and I urge everybody to assist him”, adding that the elections had been done “in a democratic environment and were transparent”.

According to Husam Al-Naili, the party’s media director, Sawan would now focus on attracting support from young people, as made clear in his speech. He would also encourage young people in the party to take on a prominent positions in future,” Naili told this newspaper.

The 55-year-old Sawan hails from Misurata and has a Bachelor’s degree in social science from Benghazi University in 1982. He has been a member of the Muslim Brotherhood since 1989 and became a member of its executive office in 1995. Three years later he was sentenced to death by the Qaddafi regime but freed from prison in 2006. He became head of the Libyan Muslim Brotherhood in 2006 and was elected as president of the newly party in April 2012. [/restrict]
