Tripoli, 9 March 2014:

The Libyan Women’s Union, youth organisations from across the country and a French delegation of education . . .[restrict]experts held a forum on the role of women and youth in society in Tripoli yesterday.

Around 40 representatives from the different groups held debates throughout the day on the ways the government and civil society groups could support Libyan youth and women. At the end of the session the forum summarised their recommendations which will be passed on to the Ministry of Labour.

These included the provision for more training by the government for youth and women’s organisations, a role for Libyan NGOs in Congressional committees, more funding from large corporations operating in Libya to youth and women’s groups and the opportunity for NGOs to monitor Congress’ meetings.

The President of the Libyan Women’s Union in Tripoli, Samira Massoudi, told the Libya Herald beforehand that the role of youth and women in Libya was crucial and that youth in particular were in danger of being left behind in a new Libya. She added that the event showed that different groups could work together to achieve their goals.

The head of the French delegation, Marion Isvi, a project manager for French NGO Réseau Euromed France which organised the French visit said the event was important because it would allow delegates to exchange ideas, debate and have a conversation about democracy. [/restrict]
