Tripoli, 4 March 2014:
A fibre optic cable between Egypt and Libya was repaired this morning after being cut yesterday . . .[restrict]on the Egyptian side of the border near Shalloum.
Deputy Communications Minister Mohammed Bilrasali told the Libya Herald he had been notified by Egyptian authorities that the cable, operated by the Libya International Telecommunications Company, was repaired between 10 and 11am this morning.
He said the interruption had not affected telecommunication or internet services because the cable provided emergency capacity and was not in use. He added that cables providing communications coverage from Egypt had only been installed as a back-up to the main network which was currently operating as normal.
Bilrasali said that he did not know what had caused the cut but that he was “very pleased” it had been fixed so quickly. [/restrict]
