Opinion: Handover ceremony – Mustafa Abdul Jalil controversial to the end

By Sami Zaptia.

Tripoli, 30 May 2013:

Speaking at a press conference immediately . . .[restrict]after GNC head Mohamed Magarief announced his resignation Tuesday afternoon, GNC official spokesperson Omar Hamaidan said that Magarief’s former First Deputy Juma Attaiga, would now become head of the GNC.

As possible alternate scenarios, Hamaidan said that Attaiga could continue as GNC head, and without mentioning it specifically, implied that if it were temporary, meaning if he were to be excluded by the Political Isolation Law, which is highly likely in view of his work with Saif Qaddafi in a human rights committee, the Second Deputy Head of the GNC Salah Makhzoum would take over.

To the speculation by the press that both the First and Second Deputy heads could be disbarred by the Political Isolation Law, Hamaidan said that if there were a vacancy the oldest member of Congress would act as its head.

Ultimately, Hamaidan said that whoever took over, this would be until a new GNC head was elected.

Hamaidan gave no indications as to who the contenders to head the GNC might be nor the expected time frame for these elections. [/restrict]
